What is high blood pressure?
High blood pressure or hypertension means high pressure (tension) in the arteries. Arteries are the blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to all tissues and organs. Normal blood pressure is 120/80; blood pressure between 120 / 80mmHg and 139/89 mmHg is called “pre-hypertension”, and blood pressure 140/90 mmHg and higher is considered elevated.

The upper figure, systolic blood pressure, corresponds to the pressure in the arteries when the heart contracts and expels blood into the arteries. The lower number, diastolic pressure, represents the pressure in the arteries when the heart relaxes after a contraction. Diastolic pressure reflects the lowest pressure to which the arteries are exposed.

Elevated systolic and / or diastolic blood pressure increases the risk of developing heart, kidney, eye, stroke and atherosclerosis (hardening of blood vessels).

Therefore, the diagnosis of high blood pressure is very important as well as efforts to lower the pressure because it prevents complications.

It used to be thought that high diastolic pressure was a much more important risk factor than high systolic pressure but today it is known that in people in their 50s as well as older, systolic hypertension poses a high risk.

The American Heart Association has found that high blood pressure affects approximately one in three adults in the United States. High blood pressure has also been found to affect 2 million children and youth in the United States, and the Journal of the American Medical Association reports that many are still undiagnosed.
