Environment (E), health (H) and safety (S) (together EHS) is a methodology that studies and applies the practical aspects of environmental protection, health and safety in the workplace. In simple terms, this is what organizations need to do to ensure that their activities do not cause harm to anyone. Usually, quality - quality assurance and quality control - come together to form the division of the company known as HSQE.

From a safety standpoint, this includes establishing organized efforts and procedures to identify hazards in the workplace and reduce accidents and exposure to harmful situations and substances. It also includes training of personnel in accident prevention, accident response, emergency preparedness and use of protective clothing and equipment.

Better health at its heart should be the development of safe, high-quality, environmentally friendly processes, work practices and systematic activities that prevent or reduce the risk of harm to people in general, operators or patients.

From an environmental point of view, this includes establishing a systematic approach to complying with environmental regulations, such as waste management or air emissions to help the site reduce the company's carbon footprint.

Regulatory requirements play an important role in EHS discipline and EHS managers need to identify and understand relevant EHS regulations, the consequences of which must be communicated to executive management in order for the company to implement appropriate measures. Organizations based in the United States are subject to EHS regulations in the Federal Code, particularly CFRs 29, 40, and 49. However, EHS management is not limited to legal compliance and companies should be encouraged to do more than required by the law, if appropriate.

The chemical industry introduced the first official EHS management approach in 1985 as a response to several catastrophic accidents (such as the Seveso disaster of July 1976 and the Bhopal disaster of December 1984). This worldwide voluntary initiative, called "Responsible Care", started by the Canadian Chemical Industry Association (formerly the Canadian Chemical Manufacturers Association - CCPA), operates in about 50 countries, with central coordination provided by the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) It includes eight basic characteristics which ensure plant and product safety, occupational health and environmental protection, but which also seek to demonstrate through image-building campaigns that the chemical industry operates responsibly. Being an ICCA initiative, it is limited to the chemical industry.

Since the 1990s, general approaches to EHS management that can be adapted to any type of organization have emerged in international standards such as the Valdez Principles, [7] which have been formulated to guide and evaluate corporate behavior towards the environment.
