Surat at-Tariq (Arabic: الطارق, “The Piercing Star”, “The Nightcomer”, literally “The Knocker”) is the eighty-sixth surah of the Quran (Qur'an / Quraan) with 17 ayat. It is positioned in Para 30 which is also known as Juz Amma (Juz' 30) of Holy Quran (AlQuran / AlQur'an).
Muslims believe this chapter was sent to Mohammed (s) when he was in Mecca.
Hadith / Hadees:
The first and foremost exegesis / tafsir of the Quran (Al-Quran / Al-Qur'an) is found in hadith of Muhammad (s). Although scholars including ibn Taymiyyah claim that Muhammad (s) has commented on the whole of the Quran (Mushaf / Koran / Kuran), others including Ghazali cite the limited amount of narratives, thus indicating that he has commented only on a portion of the Quran (Qura'an). Hadis (حديث) is literally "speech" or "report", that is a recorded saying or tradition of Muhammad validated by isnad; with Sirah Rasul Allah these comprise the sunnah and reveal shariah. According to Hazrat Aishah (r.a), the life of Prophet Muhammad (s) was practical implementation of Quran. Therefore, mention in hadith elevates the importance of the pertinent surah from a certain perspective. According to hadith, the prophet Muhammad (s) used to recite this surah in Zuhr prayer and Asr prayer.
Jabir bin Samurah narrated: "For Zuhr and Asr, Allah's Messenger (s) would recite: By the heavens, holding the Buruj (Surah 85) and (By the heavens and At-Tariq) and similar to them."
The subjects in this Surah are mainly divided into two groups:
1. Resurrection and
2. The Holy Qur'an and its value.
At the beginning, after some reflective oaths, it points to the existence of some divine protectors of man.
To make manifest the possibility of Resurrection, it refers to the first stage of man's life and his creation from a sperm drop and then it draws a conclusion that the Creator, who is able to create him from such a lowly life-germ, can give life again, to him.
In the following part, it describes the Resurrection and the uniqueness it has. Then, it offers some meaningful oaths to verify the importance of the Holy Qur'an; and finally, it finishes the Surah by mentioning Allah’s punishments for the unbelievers in order to give a warning to them.
The Virtue:
There is a tradition from the Prophet (Sal Allaho Alehi Wasallam) for the virtue of this Surah which says:
“For the person who studies this Surah, Allah will reward this action ten times the number of stars in the sky.”
There is a narration from Imam Sadiq which says:
"Anyone who recites Surah Tariq in his obligatory prayers (salah / salat / solat / namaz / salaah / salaat) will have a high rank with Allah in the Hereafter, and will be the prophets ' close friend and companion in Heaven.”
Obviously, it is the content of the Surah and acting accordingly which deserves such great rewards; not its mere recitation without following by action.
1. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) said: Whoever recites Surat Tariq, virtues ten times the number of all the stars in the sky would be written for him.
2. Imam as-Sadiq (a.s.) said: Whoever recites Surah Tariq in his obligatory prayer would enjoy great prestige and position before Allah on the Day of Judgment and he would be among the friends of the prophets and their companions in Paradise.
