Béjaïa (in Berber: ⴱⴳⴰⵢⵜ - Bgayet or ⴲⴳⴰⵢⵜ - Ḇgayet, in Arabic: بجاية, anc. Bougie), is an Algerian town located on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea, 220 km east of Algiers. It is the capital of the wilaya of Béjaïa and the daïra of Béjaïa, in Kabylia.

Known in Roman times under the name of Saldae, it was promoted to capital of the vandal kingdom before being Islamized in the 7th century. A modest Berber city, it became a prestigious capital under the Hammadids in the eleventh century and a religious, commercial and learned center of the Mediterranean. After an Almohad interlude, it again becomes the capital of a branch of the Hafsids.

Renowned in Europe for the quality of its beeswax candles - to which it gave its name: candles - Béjaïa also played an important role in the dissemination in the West of Arabic numerals and local mathematical knowledge. In the Middle Ages, scholars like Raymond Lulle, Fibonacci and Ibn Khaldoun studied there.

After a gradual and relative decline that began in the fifteenth century (due in particular to reconfigurations in world trade), Bejaïa, conquered by the Spaniards in 1510, therefore suffered a sharp decline which would continue with the reconquest by the regency of Algiers in 1555. It substantially loses its scholarly culture; its large educational establishments are no longer, its great scientific personalities are no longer there (gone to other large cities of the Maghreb and the Middle East); only the decentralized theological institution of the zaouias remains. It is eclipsed, on the scale of the Central Maghreb, by Algiers, seat of political power and of the navy. It continues to derive a certain prestige from its religious mystics and from the export of wood from the hinterland. It was taken by the French in 1833. It then continued its decline to be nothing more than an average port city, exporting local agricultural products, then revived with a certain dynamism at the end of the nineteenth century.

When the country gained independence in 1962, it found a cultural role. Indeed, a large Berber-speaking city, it becomes one of the centers of the Berber identity claim. It is also gradually becoming a port of primary importance, following that of Algiers and ahead of Oran.

With its 177,988 inhabitants at the last census in 2008, Béjaïa is the largest city in Kabylia and “capital” of lower Kabylia. It is also, thanks to its geographical location, the most important industrial pole in the region, in particular by the concentration of many industries, and the presence of one of the largest oil and commercial ports in the Mediterranean. It also has an international airport.
