The Kabyles (in Berber: Iqbayliyen or Izwawen, in Tifinagh: ⵉⵣⵡⴰⵡⵏ, Algerian Arabic: القبايل) are a Berber ethnic group from Kabylia (in Kabyle: Tamurt n Leqvayel), a Berber-speaking region of Algeria with a predominantly mountainous region. They populate the coast and the various mountain ranges of the region: the mountains of Djurdjura, Bibans and Babors. From the end of the 19th century, the Kabyles provided the first Berber-speaking group by number in Algeria. Since the independence of this country, they constitute the environment most favorable to the development of the Berber identity claim. They are now present in other regions of Algeria, notably in Algiers, and among the Algerian diaspora in France.

Etymology
The French term “kabyle” is borrowed from the Arabic qabīla (“tribe, family”), whose plural, qabāʾil, designates the Kabyles. Qabīla is derived from the root q-b-l which, like the verb qabila, denotes acceptance. The terms "Kabylie" and "Kabyle" were imposed in the middle of the nineteenth century when, taking possession of Algeria, the French (soldiers, administrators then researchers) felt the need to identify the different regions of the colony. and the populations that were established there.

The original term "Qabail", which in Arabic means "Tribes", is the term that the French will use to designate these mountain people who had different names depending on the tribe to which they belonged. He could also designate both the Chaouis of the Aurès and those of western Algeria. We then spoke of Kabylia of Ouarsenis.

The name was then restricted to the Berber speakers of Kabylia and took on an ethnic meaning to designate this people in particular.

Arabic speakers used the word Zwawa (sg. Zwawi) which, according to one hypothesis, would be a deformation of the Berber Agawa, a massif in the heart of Great Kabylia, the Agawa massif, hence the origin of the word Igawawen16 to designate the Kabyles, and which was the name of an ancient and powerful confederation of eight tribes spread in Kabylia and organized in two groups: Aït Bethroun (Aït Yenni, Aït Boudrar, Aït Bou Akkach, Aït Ouasif) and Aït Menguellath (Aït Menguellath, Aït bou Youssef, Aït Akbil, Aït Attaf). According to Ibn Khaldoun, the Zouaouas are a fraction of the Kutamas, a tribe from a branch of the Branès (descendants of Bernès, son of Berr and brother of Medghacen). The name zwawa thus qualified all Kabyles in general, its equivalent in the Berber language being izwawen.

However, the most likely hypothesis is that of Professor Salem Chaker who writes that the term Zwawa / Zwawi used by Arabic speakers should not be related to agawa / igawawen but rather to Azwaw / Izwawen (Kabyle first name and common clan name in Kabylia). Salem Chaker supports the idea that Izwawen is the real old and indigenous name of the Kabyles who, "at the height of the historical depression, have almost forgotten their real name". In addition, in western Algeria, the Kabyles are still referred to as Zouaoua / Zouaoui.

We can note that in the speech of At Mangellat, the original term formerly attested to say Kabyles was indeed Igawawen.

The Kabyles of the Babors (Béjaïa, Jijel, Sétif) come from two Berber tribes, the Kutamas (under the Fatimid dynasty), and the Sanhadja (under the Hammadid dynasty). To this must be added the Berbers of Andalusia who took refuge in Béjaïa (Bougie), helped by the Hammadid sultan En-Nacer de Béjaïa in the eleventh century.
