Name: Zhamanshin meteorite crater
Monument type: Sacred object
Location: Aktobe region, Irgiz district, 40 km. southwest of the district center.
Research: Zhamanshin was first investigated in 1937-1939 by scientists A.L. Yanshin and V.A. Vakhrameev. In the same years, Zhamanshin was studied by geologists. As a result, they find here rocks of the Paleozoic era. Zhamanshin's research was not easy. Therefore, geological work continued in 1946, 1957, 1961 and 1963. During the research, many samples of black slag, glass of a special type were found there. The found minerals were sent to the famous Moscow scientist Pyotr Florensky. In 1975-1976, he scientifically proved that the Zhamanshin crater arose as a result of a meteorite fall. The special stones found here were named zhamanshit, irgizite. After that, in the summer of 1977, a special expedition of the Committee on Meteorites began to work here. In September 1989, an international expedition was organized from among scientists from the United States, Canada, the German Democratic Republic and France, which glorified Zhamanshin all over the world.
Legends: There are many legends about Zhamanshin. This place was named Zhamanshin because no grass grew there, no animals were found there. Here they hid from their persecutors during the years of repressions and wars.
