The Bhagavad Gita is a dialogue between “Arjuna”, a supernaturally talented warrior and his guide and charioteer Lord Krishna on the battlefield of “Kurukshetra”. As both armies stand ready for the battle, the mighty warrior “Arjuna”, on observing the warriors on both sides becomes overwhelmed with grief and compassion due to the fear of losing his relatives and friends and the consequent sins attributed to killing his own relatives. So, his admission of defeat to Lord Krishna, looking for a solution. Thus, follows the understanding of the Bhagavad Gita. Over 18 chapters, the Bhagavad Gita packs an intense analysis of life, emotions and ambitions, discussion of various types of yoga, including Jnama, Bhakti, Karma and Raja, the difference between self and the material body as well as the revelation of the Ultimate Purpose of Life.
Bhagavad Gita is an ancient scripture that is still relevant in today’s modern-day time, irrespective of a person’s faith, caste, religion, or nationality. They can be benefited from reading, listening, and practicing it.
The Bhagavad Gita is not content with providing a lofty philosophical appreciative; it also describes clear-cut techniques for implementing its spiritual principles for everyday life. These techniques of applying the science of spirituality in our lives are termed “Yog.” Hence, the Bhagavad Gita is also called “Yog Shastra,” meaning, the scripture that teaches the practice of “Yog”.

Unable to deal with the immediate difficult at hand, “Arjun” approached Shree Krishna for a palliative to overcome the anguish he was experiencing. Shree Krishna did not just advise him on his immediate problem, but digressed to give a philosophical discourse on the philosophy of life. Hence, the purpose of the Bhagavad Gita, above everything else, is to impart “Brahma Vidya”, the science of God-realization.

Inexperienced spiritual specialists often separate spirituality from temporal life; some look on beatitude as something to be attained in the hereafter. But the Bhagavad Gita makes no such difference, and aims at the consecration of every aspect of human life in this world itself. Thus, all its eighteen chapters are designated as different types of “Yog”, since they deal with methodologies for the application of spiritual knowledge to practical life.
The text offers various approaches to liberation from suffering, self-realization and connection with the Divine, whilst highlighting the importance of selflessness. It is suggested that action, devotion, self-study and meditation are performed from the heart, with full attention and awareness.

Vidura Niti comprises of maxims of Vidura on “right conduct” in the form of a dialogue with King Dhritarashtra. This text, containing more than 500 slokas, is found in chapters 33 to 40 of Udyoga Parva of Maha Bharata of Sage Vyasa.
