Wayang kulit is a traditional Indonesian art that mainly developed in Java. Wayang comes from the word 'Ma Hyang' which means to go to a spiritual spirit, a deity, or God Almighty. There are also those who interpret wayang as a Javanese term meaning 'shadow', this is because the audience can also watch the puppet from behind the color or only its shadow. Wayang kulit is played by a puppeteer who is also the narrator of the dialogue of wayang figures, accompanied by gamelan music played by a group of nayaga and song sung by pesinden.

Ki Manteb Soedharsono is a famous puppeteer from Central Java. Because of his skills in playing puppets, he was dubbed his fans as the Dalang Satan. He is also considered a pioneer of the integration of puppetry art with modern musical equipment. To improve his skills, Manteb learned a lot from senior puppeteers, for example the legendary puppeteer Ki Narto Sabdo in 1972, and to Ki Sudarman Gondodarsono who was a saber expert, in 1974. Ki Manteb's expertise in sabet shooting was not just a fighting scene, but also includes scenes of dancing, sadness, joy, surprise, sleepiness, and so on. In addition he also created a flashback scene that was previously only known in the world of film and literary works.

The Javanese are the largest ethnic group in Indonesia, originating from Central Java, East Java, the Special Region of Yogyakarta, the Indramayu Regency (West Java), and the Serang – Cilegon Regency / City (Banten). In 2010, at least 40.22% of Indonesia's population was Javanese.
