Faraz, (12 January 1931 – 25 August 2008) was a Pakistani. Urdu poet, scriptwriter, and chairman of Pakistan Academy of Letters. He wrote his poetry under the pseudonym Faraz. During his lifetime, he criticized military rule and coup d'état in the country and was displaced by military dictators. He was awarded the Sitara-i-Imtiaz and Hilal-e-Imtiaz. On 25 August 2008, he died in Islamabad.

Ahmad Faraz was born on January 5 in a respectable Sadat family in Kohat. His real name was Syed Ahmad Shah. When Ahmad Faraz started writing poetry, his name was Ahmad Shah Kohati, who later became Ahmad Faraz on the advice of Faiz Ahmad Faiz. Ahmad Faraz's mother tongue was Pashto but from the beginning Faraz was fond of reading and writing Urdu and over time his interest in Urdu language and literature began to grow. His father wanted him to pursue a career in mathematics and science, but Ahmad Faraz's natural inclination was towards literature and poetry. Therefore, he obtained his MA in Persian and Urdu from Edward College, Peshawar, and studied formal literature and poetry. Ahmed Faraz started his career as a scriptwriter at Radio Pakistan Peshawar but later became an Urdu teacher at the University of Peshawar. When the government of Pakistan established the country's highest literary body, the Academy of Letters, Ahmed Faraz became its first director general.
Faraz was a true artist of his time. Truthfulness and honesty were the main elements of his creative nature. He always raised his voice against the corruption of the government of the time and the establishment. He was also arrested for sharply criticizing General Zia-ul-Haq's dictatorship. Hardly any other poet has heard Faraz with as much love and interest in Indo-Pak poetry. Faraz was appreciated at every level and he was also awarded many honors and prizes.
