The Meet the Birds mobile application has been prepared for visually impaired people who want to learn about birds in the field. It is also useful for other people curious about birds and their voices.
The application was developed in cooperation with BirdLife International partners from Poland (Polish Society for the Protection of Birds, OTOP), Ireland (BirdWatch Ireland), Cyprus (BirdLife Cyprus) and Malta (BirdLife Malta), as well as with the participation of experts from the Polish Association of the Blind. It is the result of the Seeing the World Through Nature project (the Polish title of the project We experience the world through nature), implemented by the Erasmus + program of the European Union.
The application has an interface adapted to the needs of the blind and visually impaired.
It contains descriptions, photos and voice recordings of 134 bird species most typical for the regions of northern, central and southern Europe, represented by Ireland, Poland, Malta and Cyprus. The interface and information are available in English, Polish, Greek and Maltese.
The application has the following functionalities:
Hearing bird identification mechanism based on a key questionnaire in which the user selects responses describing the bird's voice and the conditions surrounding the observation.
The application locates the user via GPS and narrows down the list of potential bird species that the user may have heard and seen to the geographic region of Europe in which he is located.
The user can search for bird species of interest by entering their name in the search engine. He can also check what species of birds exist in the region including its current location.
The user can listen to recordings of bird voices from the application's database. It also has the ability to record the voices of birds in the field and listen to them, and identify them at a later date.
The user can adjust the application settings - font size and screen contrast - to his needs.
