GEOSUN is a scientific and technological project of regional cooperation between South Africa and Reunion, the intiative of LE2P and port cities, The Port and Durban.

Building on the experience related to RCI_GS project (Intelligent Sensor Network for a better understanding of Azimuth Solar) initiated in 2011, the LE2P has partnerships with research teams from neighboring countries to start a ground network solar mapping on the West zone of the Indian Ocean.

On the initiative of two sister cities who want to expand their trading activities, namely the City of Port Reunion and Durban in South Africa, LE2P has approached the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) the study of solar radiation is also one of the research subjects.

The two teams, pooling their know-how, have decided to launch a network of sensors in KwaZulu Natal.

While the experience of LE2P based on the SPN1 pyranometer at Delta T Devices, that of UKZN is based on the tracker SOLYS 2 by Kipp & Zonen, both technologies being complementary. The project purpose is therefore to acquire two sensor pairs, each pair consisting of a SPN1 and a SOLYS 2, and install them in parallel in South Africa and Reunion, a couple of devices on each instead, the owner LE2P remaining equipment.

The side of the City of Port, the first couple will expand the network RCI_GS project.
In Durban, the second couple allow UKZN to start his own local network. After a campaign of several months, once started the own partner network, devices purchased under the project and hosted R.A.S. will be recovered. They then allow the LE2P of to launch other similar radiometric networks elsewhere in the Indian Ocean (Madagascar, Mayotte, Mauritius ...).

Alongside the deployment of these networks, the project's ambition is to allow the LE2P to open a regional center for calibration of radiometers and integrate, as the first station in the area, the network BSRN (Baseline Surface Radiation Network ) of the World Meteorological Office. Indeed, it is essential that data from radiometers are of high quality. Start, finally, a basic knowledge of solar flux measured in the field, at the regional level of the western Indian Ocean, is one of the major advantages of this project. This information will be available to all end solaristes and scientific (economic development of solar, climate studies ...) through the development of web decision support tools.
