In the Gerolsteiner Land holiday region, the “Vulkaneifel virtually enlivened” project was developed.
The subject of volcanism is a unique selling point, especially for the Vulkaneifel area. The characteristics of the Quaternary Eifel volcanism with maars, dry maars and volcanic mountains are the special attractions of the region. There are also numerous mineral springs with their CO2 emissions.
In order to bundle valuable sights and make them digitally tangible, the app "Vulkaneifel virtually enlivened" was developed. We hope you enjoy discovering the Gerolsteiner Land!
The following topics can be discovered:
Arensberg volcanic crater
The Arensberg, one of the greatest geological attractions, is located near Zilsdorf and is the only significant volcanic dome from the tertiary period. Back then, two volcanic eruptions created a mountain where there was none before. You can enter the crater through a tunnel.
Dreimühlen waterfall
The Dreimühlen waterfall is located between Üxheim, Niederehe and Nohn. As a natural monument and popular excursion destination, it provides refreshment on hot days and exciting day trips all year round. When the railway line was built at that time, the three source rivers were combined and diverted, creating the waterfall. The sinter bench grows further and further forward into the valley (approx. 10 cm per year), hence the name "growing waterfall".
Steffeln volcanic garden
The volcanic garden in Steffeln shows various geological phenomena related to volcanism on a tour at 24 stations. Today's visitor can visit different highlights and recognize the volcanic processes from that time. Guided tours through the Eifelverein are offered here on a regular basis.
Eichholzmaar
There are a good 350 volcanoes in the Vulkaneifel - including 75 “maars”. 12 maars have a maar lake, including the “Eichholzmaar”. With a diameter of 120 meters and a maximum depth of 3 meters, the Eichholzmaar is one of the smaller Eifelmaars. Nevertheless, the circular shape of the maar basin is clearly visible. The Eichholzmaar lies between Steffeln and Duppach.
Ice caves in Birresborn
When you enter the Birresborn Ice Caves, the cold comes first. For centuries the so-called "ice caves" were used as ice storage facilities. The history of the caves as a mining site for coveted millstones is still recognizable today. In winter, animals such as bats use the caves to hibernate, which is why they are only accessible to visitors from April to October.
The origin of mineral water - Gerolsteiner Brunnen
Gerolsteiner Brunnen GmbH & Co. KG is a German manufacturer and distributor of mineral water products. With more than 900 employees, the company is one of the largest in the Trier region. Gerolsteiner is the world market leader in carbonated mineral waters. It owes its special taste to its geology, the geological conditions at the source site of Gerolstein. The app explains the origin of mineral water and the history of the Gerolsteiner Brunnen.
Sarresdorf lava flow
The Hagelskaule lava flow in Gerolstein is known as the Sarresdorfer Lava Flow. Sarresdorf is the oldest settlement area in the Kylltal of the Gerolsteiner area, located on the northern bank of the Kyll and today it has grown together with Gerolstein itself into one place. The Sarresdorf lava flow is the youngest lava flow in Germany.
