Sunan Kalijaga is one of the Wali Songo clerics who is known for the widest influence and scope of his da'wah in Java. The life history of Sunan Kalijaga is not as smooth as imagined. Before becoming a preacher, he was a bromocorah alias criminal.

The history of Sunan Kalijaga's life crosses the boundaries of the successive eras of the kingdoms in Java. He witnessed changes since the end of the Majapahit Kingdom, then the Demak Sultanate, the Pajang Sultanate, to the beginning of the Islamic Mataram Sultanate.

Born with the name Raden Said around 1450 AD, Sunan Kalijaga was the son of Tumenggung Wilatikta, the Regent of Tuban. In his youth, Raden Said was known as a naughty teenager who liked to gamble, drink alcohol, steal, and commit many disgraceful acts.

This made his father who was a noble and ruler of Tuban ashamed to have a delinquent child. As a result, Raden Said was kicked out of the house by his parents.

Raden Said's delinquency actually escalated. He became a bromocorah alias criminal. His job is to cause trouble and riots, even Raden Said is said to have killed people.

In the book History of Islamic Culture (2020) written by Suhailid, when Raden Said robbed and robbed people of property, he was known as Lokajaya, which means ruler of the region.

One time, Raden Said was hit by a stone, the person he was going to rob was Sunan Bonang. Because of Sunan Bonang's influence, Raden Said finally realized and repented, and no longer confiscated property and committed despicable acts.

Sunan Bonang later became Raden Said's spiritual teacher. Apart from studying Islam with Sunan Bonang, Raden Said also pursued Javanese literature and studied puppetry.

Later, this knowledge of art and culture was used as a means of Islamic da'wah by Sunan Kalijaga so that it was accepted by the local community.
