Yoshin presents a collection of emotional storytelling and comic book artwork set around the events of the devastating Tohoku Earthquake, the most powerful in Japan and the fourth most since records began. Its toll was nearly 20,000 lives, at least 2,529 missing, thousands displaced and damage to over a million buildings across twenty prefectures.
In this interactive collection of tales of love, loss and more, artists and writers create voices inspired from those people caught up in those terrible events.

In Kamaishi, there is a memorial stone which marks the height the waters reached inland. It reads: “Just run. Run uphill…And tell future generations that a tsunami reached this point.” On March 11th 2011, of Kamaishi’s 39,578 residents, 1,064 lost their lives.

Yoshin, which translates as aftershocks, began with one such story and has now become an anthology of ‘flash’ stories told in settings around the cities and towns impacted by the disaster.

This creative collective of writers and artists has contributed to plays with the form of flash fiction and poetry with stunning illustrations.
Many of the stories are narrated by Houmi Miura (TOTAL WAR games) and Haruka Kuroda (the voice of Noodle in the Gorillaz).

Writers include: Clare Sumi, Dave Swann, Houmi Miura, Jac Catteneo, Natsu Hirakawa, Peter Davison and Susana Jones.
Artists’ work includes: Grant Perkins, Jem Milton, Katorina Champman, Luci Sullivan, Mathilde Heu, Shangomola Edunjobi and Susana Jones.

This incredible collection of flash, short stories, poems, all as individual and unique as their protagonists is available for free and was supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

This application is also in support of the Peace Boat Disaster Relief.
