In order to get to know the Al-Quran it would be better if we first get to know the concept of revelation. The reason behind why the previous people did not want to believe was precisely because they denied the revelation that came down, aka rejecting the concept of revelation.

And one thing that is important to note is that the main factor that distinguishes accepted religion from shirk religion is also the factor of revelation, where a religion that pleases Allah SWT is only limited to the religion of revelation, while religion that is not based on revelation will not be accepted by Allah SWT.

The concept of revelation is actually very simple, easy to digest, does not require too much intellectual level. Even the entire nation with the lowest level of civilization must be able to accept the concept of revelation.

The concept of revelation begins with the existence of the concept of divinity which is universal and has been agreed upon by all human civilization. There is not a single layer of society, even the most primitive ones, who do not recognize the concept of god.

What remains that distinguishes is whether God sent down revelation or not. This is the clear border line between divine religions and non-celestial religions (Ardhi religion). Divine religions are religions that have the basic concept that God sends down revelations, whereas non-celestial religions have the concept that God exists, God is great, God is this and that, but God does not send down revelations.

Later this non-celestial religion was also often referred to as the religion of shirk, because the concept of gods became numerous and full of belief in gods.

For example, the shirk religion adopted by the Arabs in the era before the Prophet Muhammad SAW was sent. They believe in Allah SWT, even calling the Kaaba the house of Allah (baitullah). In all cases they always say bismillah. They are also familiar with the unseen angels and even their ancestor, Ibrahim and Ismail.

However, they were not familiar with the concept of revelation that came down to them, and even denied it. They do not understand the figure of the prophet as a person who was sent down to him by divine revelation. In their godly concept, the matter of revelation is the business of angels, it has nothing to do with human figures who become prophets and receive revelations. To them it's a strange and unacceptable concept. That's why they protested as recorded by the Koran:

And they said: "Why did the apostle eat food and walk in the markets? Why wasn't an angel sent down to him so that the angel would warn him with him?, (Surah Al-Furqan: 7).
