The procedure to calculate the NIF letter from DNI is to take this number and divide by 23. Starting from the division we get a quotient and a remainder. For the remainder with the letter, according to the following allocation:

0 = T 1 = R 2 = W 3 = 4 = G 5 = M 6 = Y F 7 = 8 = 9 = P D 10 = X 11 = B 12 = N 13 = J 14 = Z 15 = S 16 = Q 17 = V 18 = M 19 = L 20 = C 21 = K 22 = E

For example, if we have the ID number 12345678, divide by 23 to get 14 as remainder, so that the letter would be Z, and NIF would 12345678Z

The foreigner identity number (NIE), is used as code for the identification of non-nationals. It is made by initial seven digits and one alphabetic character verification. The initial letter is assigned an X for NIE before July 2008 and assigned to Y for from that date. Having exhausted the serial number and the standard is expected to use Z.
