उदासीनाचार्य श्री श्रीचंद्र जी महाराज का प्रादुर्भाव संवत् 1551 भाद्रपद शुक्ला नवमी के दिन खड्गपुर तहसील के तलवंडी ग्राम (ननकाना साहिब,अब पाकिस्तान) में श्री गुरुनानकदेव और सुलक्षणा देवी के गर्भ से हुआ था। कतिपय विद्वानों के मत में आपका आविर्भाव सुल्तानपुर जिला कपूरथला पंजाब में हुआ था। उनके गुरु अविनाशी मुनि ने उन्हें उदासीन सम्प्रदाय की दीक्षा देते हुए वैदिक धर्म, संस्कृति और राष्ट्र के उद्धार की प्रेरणा दी। आचार्य श्री श्रीचंद्र उच्च कोटि के दार्शनिक,भाष्यकार,योगी,सन्तकवि तथा विचारक थे। उन्होंने साम्राज्यवादी,सामन्तवादी तथा महाजनी व्यवस्था से छिन्न-भिन्न होते हुए भारतीय समाज को मुक्ति का मार्ग दिखाया। हताश जनता के हृदय में आत्मविश्वास उत्पन्न किया तथा नैतिक जीवन मूल्यों का उपदेश कर अनीति और कदाचार से भरे जन-जीवन की नई चमक और ऊर्जा प्रदान की। वह केवल आध्यात्मिक साधक ही न थे,उन्होंने समाज सुधार,राष्ट्रनिर्माण तथा मानव मात्रा की एकता के सूत्र को व्यावहारिक रूप देने के लिए तिब्बत,भूटान,नेपाल,सम्पूर्ण भारतवर्ष, नगर ठट्ठा,कंधार,काबुल तथा उत्तर पश्चिमी सीमाप्रान्त के सुदूर स्थानों की यात्राएं की। अपने अखण्ड ब्रह्मचर्य,आत्म संयम,कठोर तप,वैदिक-पौराणिक उपदेश,चमत्कार पूर्ण कार्यों तथा लोक- हितकारी विचारों द्वारा उन्होंने सद्धर्महीन जनता को स्वधर्म पालन का पाठ पढ़ाते हुए संगठित किया एवं श्रुति-स्मृति द्वारा अनुमोदित धर्म के द़ृढ़तापूर्वक पालन की प्रेरणा दी।
मुस्लिम आक्रान्ताओं के कठोर व्यवहार से त्रस्त जन-जीवन का उन के उपदेश मृत संजीविनी के समान सुखकारी लगे। मध्यकाल के पतनोन्मुख समाज का भयावह चित्रण उनकी वाणियों में हुआ है। राजा,नवाब,जागीरदार,जमींदार,सरकारीअहलकार,कारिंदे,सिपाही, धर्मगुरु सन्त,फकीर,औलिया तथा महाजन सभी तो भोली-भाली जनता को लूटने में लगे थे। शहरों की दशा तो हीन थी ही, ग्रामों की दशा भी अत्यन्त शोचनीय थी। किसानों,मजदूरों,शिल्पियों और कामगारों को मेहनत करने के बाद भी दो समय की रोटी नसीब न थी।
श्री श्रीचंद्रजी ने उनकी दयनीय दशा का चित्रण अपनी वाणी में किया है। इस द़ृष्टि से वह मध्यकाल के क्रान्तिकारी सन्त कवियों में अग्रणी हैं। उन्होंने जात-पाँत,ऊँच-नीच तथा छोटे बड़े के भेद को कृत्रिम बताया। आत्मा की एकता के सिद्धान्त की प्रतिष्ठा कर जहाँ उन्होंने शंकर के अद्वैत को व्यवहारिक जामा पहनाया वहाँ वैदिक एकेश्चरवाद के सिद्धान्त द्वारा इस्लामी एकेश्चरवाद के सिद्धान्त को अमान्य कर दिया। शास्त्रार्थ में उलझे पण्डितों से जन सामान्य के साथ जुड़ने का आह्वान किया तथा बौद्धिक तर्क-वितर्क को मात्र बुद्धि-विलास मानते हुए सामाजिक सरोकारों को विकास करने के लिए रागात्मक संवेदन जगाने की आवश्यकता पर बल दिया। जो धर्म,पंथ या साम्प्रदायिक पारस्परिक विद्वेष तथा वैर भावना को जगाता है,वह उनकी द़ृष्टि में अशुभ है तथा जो प्राणी मात्र को एक-दूसरे के साथ जोड़ने में सहायक है,वह शुभ और मंगलकारी है।
