It is a Makki surah, meaning it was revealed in Mecca. The name of the surah means "The Detailed" or "The Explained" and it refers to the Quran itself, which is a detailed and explained criterion to distinguish between truth and falsehood. The surah also talks about the signs of Allah's power and mercy in the creation, the resurrection, and the revelation. It also warns the disbelievers of the consequences of their denial and arrogance, and encourages the believers to be grateful and patient.

It also tells us that Allah grants wisdom and knowledge to whom He wills, and that they are a great blessing for those who use them rightly.
- For being with Imam Husayn on the Day of Judgement: According to a narration from Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (may Allah have mercy on him), whoever recites Surah Fussilat often, he will be accompanied by Imam Husayn on the Day of Judgement.
- For reward like Hajj and Umrah: According to a report from Imam Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), whoever recites Surah Fussilat on Friday, he will get a reward like performing Hajj and Umrah.
