The Hebrew Bible or Tanakh is the canonical collection of Hebrew scriptures, including the Torah, the Nevi'im, and the Ketuvim.

The Torah (literally "teaching") consists of five books, commonly referred to as the "Five Books of Moses". Printed versions of the Torah are often called Chamisha Chumshei Torah (literally the "five fifth-sections of the Torah"), and informally a Chumash.

In Hebrew, the five books of the Torah are identified by the first prominent word in each book:
Bereshit (literally "In the beginning") — Genesis
Shemot (literally "Names") — Exodus
Vayikra (literally "And He called") — Leviticus
Bəmidbar (literally "In the desert [of]") — Numbers
Devarim (literally "Things" or "Words") — Deuteronomy

Nevi'im ("Prophets") is the second main division of the Tanakh. This division includes the books which cover the time from the entrance of the Israelites into the Land of Israel until the Babylonian captivity of Judah (the "period of prophecy").
The Former Prophets (Nevi'im Rishonim): Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings.
The Latter Prophets (Nevi'im Aharonim): Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel
The Twelve Minor Prophets (Trei Asar, "The Twelve"), which are considered one book: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi.

Ketuvim ("Writings") consists of eleven books.
Poetic books (Sifrei Emet): Psalms, Book of Proverbs, Book of Job
Five scrolls (Five Megillot):
* Song of Songs, also known as Song of Solomon (on Passover)
* Book of Ruth (on Shavuot)
* Book of Lamentations (on Tisha B'Av)
* Ecclesiastes (on Sukkot)
* Book of Esther (on Purim)
The remaining books in Ketuvim are Book of Daniel, Book of Ezra, Book of Nehemiah and Books of Chronicles.
