The virtual reproduction of ancient Rome is led by the "Plan of Rome" (www.unicaen.fr/rome) within the Team for Research on Literature, the Imaginary and the Companies (ERLIS, EA 4254) and with the technical support of the Interdisciplinary Center for Virtual Reality at the University of Caen (CIREVE).

The interactive virtual model Once this work is unique in its use. It makes it possible to visit almost all of ancient Rome, rendered by computer in his state of the fourth century P.C. The choice of the restored historical period (the beginning of the reign of Constantine) was thoughtful and based on several levels of consideration. The first is of museum and pedagogical: it seemed interesting that the visitor can compare the physical model Paul Bigot stored at the University of Caen Normandy (who also chose this time) and still remains visible in Rome (which are generally the last state "antique" building) with the virtual model. The second is of architectural and urban order: the reign of Constantine marks the monumental climax of "Ancient Rome", it is a kind of completion. The third is to Archaeological order: it is naturally for the last period of antiquity that the mass of archaeological information is the most important. The fourth level is methodological and is linked to the previous one: we would eventually represent multiple time levels of the Roman town and, like the first excavated archaeological layer and eventually returned is always the newest, it seemed natural to proceed in the same order.
The Roma in tabula application offers a truly interactive virtual tour, to see outside (streets, houses, shops, public buildings ...) and part of the interior (the most famous public buildings, some examples of houses and shops ). The virtual model is now used on two levels. The first is scientific: the virtual model offers the ability to view and experience: these are two key concepts for research. The permanent link with the corpus of textual sources, archaeological and iconographic can measure for each element the degree of "safety" of restitution and wide simulation exercise to measure the degree of validity of the assumptions and topographic restitution architectural. These may also be tested in conditions close to reality, the efficiency of mechanical systems such as the sprinkling of scented water in the sight of buildings or the curtain on theaters. Experimentation and validation of assumptions are made with domain experts (Roman topography, architecture, urbanism, ancient science and technology). The second level is educational: guided tours of the virtual Rome are a tool of transmission of knowledge as well as guided tours of the real Rome. Both visits are very complementary. The actual visit, when it is possible to measure the current state of conservation and soak up atmosphere. The virtual tour allows easy reading: the "ruin" is not to interpret, restitution is immediately readable. The free tour project addresses both the researcher who, in his office, working on a particular sector, and to "public plural" beyond the school and university executives.
