ColourCycler Secret Diary is a novelty app where a simple game, the ColourCycler component, can be used to mask a 'Secret Diary' component.

The app is designed so there is no obvious reference to a 'Secret Diary' on the user’s device, the ColourCycler component used to label the app, and theme the launch icon design. All data the user might create using the app is stored to device, diary entries are stored encrypted.

Throughout the 'Secret Diary' component of the app, an always available on screen button, immediately swaps out diary screens, replacing them with a game screen. However, this button is temporarily disabled along with all other app functions when the user initiates a password change, deletes the diary database, or deletes all app data so that the processes can complete without error.

The app can be set to launch to the game component, with no reference to the diary in the game, instead an event sequence activating the diary. After arriving at the diary from the game, a successful password entry is required to change any settings, or read from or write to the diary.

The app has two settings, higher and lower security. On the higher security setting, the app launches to the game, if the diary is accessed an inactivity timeout returns the user to the game after 10 to 15 minutes of inactivity. On the lower security setting, the app launches to the diary with no inactivity time out.

Whilst the user interface can mask the app's diary component, encrypted diary data is discoverable by parties with access to the user's device with the technical skills to do so. Additionally, as the app is a public release, the program code itself need not be examined to know that the app incorporates a 'Secret Diary.'

The app is not designed to be run in the background on a device, rather used and then closed. Running the app in the background, risks the app coming to the foreground on a screen that reveals it has a diary component / diary entries being visible when brought to the foreground.

The app program code includes an instruction to ‘Google Drive’ not to back up. The design of the app does not allow for user diary entries to be ported outside of it, or to fresh installations of the app.
