Opera music (English plural form is “operas” while Italian plural form is “opera”) is an art type where musicians and singers perform a dramatic work blending text (called a libretto) and a musical score, usually in a theatrical environment. Opera blends several elements of spoken theatre like acting, scenery, and costumes and sometimes includes dance. The performance is usually given in an opera house, accompanied by a small musical ensemble or even an orchestra.

Opera is regarded as portion of the Western classical music tradition that emerged in Italy at the latter part of the 16th century with Jacopo Peri's lost Dafne. In Europe, Schütz in Germany, Purcell in England, and Lully in France helped in forming their national traditions in the 17th century. In the 18th century, Italian opera remained dominant throughout most of Europe, except France, in the 18th century, and this has attracted foreign composers like Handel.

Opera seria was the most popular type of Italian opera, until such time in the 1760s when Gluck pushed for his "reform" operas. At present, the most popular opera figure of the late 18th century is Mozart. He started with opera seria but is most renowned for his Italian comic operas, particularly The Marriage of Figaro (Le Nozze Di Figaro), Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, and The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte).
