Surah Baqrah is the second and the longest Surah of the Holy Quran, spanning over almost two Siparahs/Chapters. I has 286 verses and and 6021 words and was revealed in Madina after the Hijrat/migration. It pertains to the injunctions about dealing with various matters and the hypocrites.
The Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h) is reported to have said "Do not turn your houses into graves. Verily, Satan does not enter the house where Surat Al-Baqarah is recited."
Surah Baqarah deals with a vast variety of subjects, including Islamic laws, retells of the stories of Hazrat Ibraheem (A.S), Hazrat Musa (A.S) and Hazrat Adam (A.S). One of the major themes is guidance, urging the non-Muslims to come to Islam and accept Allah as the only God. It also warns the hypocrites about the wrath of Allah and the fate that the disbelievers will face on the day of Judgment. This Surah also describes the three attributes of the God fearing, i.e. :
1. Taqwa – believing in the unseen, having faith and trusting the teachings of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h) and Allah even if you can’t physically see them
2. Salaah –establishing prayers five times a day and worshipping Allah
3. Charity –giving from what Allah has given you to the poor and pending in the name of Allah, i.e. giving Sadqa.
Surah Al Baqrah has many benefits. It has enormous value and great rewards in this life and the next.
• Ayat-ul-Kursi is the 255th verse of Surah Baqrah and its recition protects one from the evil eye, black magic and drives away your fears
• It is said that whoever recites the last two verses of this Surah for three consecutive nights, he will remain safe from the evil plots of the shaytan and he will stay away from his house.
• Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h) also said, "He who recites the two Ayaat(verses) at the end of Surah Al Baqarah at night, they will suffice him."
