CARDIOVASCULAR RISK ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT

The Israeli Society for Research, Prevention and Treatment of Atherosclerosis is happy to give Israeli and Worldwide healthcare providers a convenient app for cardiovascular risk assessment and management. The app is based on the European Systemic Coronary Risk Estimation (SCORE) and the 2014 update of the Israeli Guidelines for the Treatment of Hyperlipidemia.

The SCORE system estimates the 10-year cumulative risk of a first fatal atherosclerotic event, whether heart attack, stroke or other occlusive arterial disease, including sudden cardiac death.

Persons with documented CVD, type 1 or type 2 diabetes, very high levels of individual risk factors (e.g. familial hypercholesterolemia) are automatically at very high or high total CV risk. No risk estimation models are needed for them; they all need active management of all risk factors.

For all other people, the use of a risk estimation system such as SCORE is recommended to estimate total CV risk since many people have several risk factors that, in combination, may result in unexpectedly high levels of total CV risk.

Israeli clinicians are encouraged to use the app in their encounters with patients to facilitate a discussion about risk factor management, including lifestyle changes and, when appropriate, pharmacotherapy.

Recommended treatment targets for LDL-cholesterol according to cardiovascular risk are provided. These targets should be used as a guidance, but should not replace clinical judgment in individual patients.
