The golden hour is known to all photographers for THE best time of the day to photograph wildlife and landscapes, since the golden light at dawn and dusk surrounds the wildlife as well as the landscape in beautiful glow of warm light with smooth shadows. The animals are more active during the golden hour at dawn and dusk since it is also cooler before the sun rises high over the landscape. This is especially the case with carnivores as they tend to sleep most of day. So to see carnivores such as the big cats it is best to spot them at dawn or dusk.
Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya is known for the biggest animal show in the world. Each year from July until to the end of October Maasai Mara in Kenya turns into a spectacle of a life time, where the Great Migration with its 1.4 million wildebeests, 500,000 gazelles, and 200,000 zebras travel from the southern part of the Serengeti in Tanzania into Kenya and the Maasai Mara on a quest for the best pastures, finding along the way the crocodile-crowded river.
As The Great Migration passes through the grass plains of Maasai Mara in Kenya, the herds of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles travel by the millions in a circle of life between the Ngorongoro area of southern parts of Serengeti in Tanzania, through the western corridor and to the north and into Maasai Mara in Kenya. After one, two and sometimes three months the herds return to the south eastern parts of Tanzania to calve. The Great Migration brings you face to face with nature while it unfolds itself on an epic scale.
The migrating wildebeest, zebras and gazelles start to enter Maasai Mara in Kenya in July and stay through October where the biggest highlight is between mid-August to the end of September. River crossing where the herds of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles are crossing the Mara River will take place several times each day creating a lot of photographic opportunities for wildlife and nature photographers.
As quoted by Karen Blixen the famous Danish author as she described Africa:
