How to – Smart Zero your Rifle – with the ultimate step by step guide - to optimize Precision and
Accuracy.
Smart Zero - calculate GP-POI (Groups for Precision) shot groups and analyse the Mean Radius for
reliable down range Precision and Accuracy results, with actual output instruction.
Smart Zero - will give you step by step guidance - to generate the correct shot group valid data and
analytics (Mean Radius, Extreme Spread, etc) for your application – hunting, sport shooting, match
shooting etc.
Smart Zero – is the ultimate tool to optimize the MEAN RADIUS of your Shot Groups for Precision
and Accuracy data to hold true in your ballistic solver app at distance.
Why does Smart Zero work? Because the objective of shooting groups is to confirm the probable (1)
zero and (2) stability of the mean POI factor of the rifle, measured against the (A) relative point of
aim (POA) also known as: Mean Radius (MR), to minimise the miss error / Median Error Radius
(MER). The Circular Error Probable (CEP) or “circle of equal probability”, with Gaussian distribution,
is a measure of the firearm’s precision as a “measure of error” in an enclosed radius circle (for
example a 1 MOA angular measurements size at distance) centred on the probable POA (point of
impact), where it is expected that 50% of rounds will impact (enclosed). Think of it as the median
error radius (MER) as a measure of precision.
The problem with small (low count) group shot data sets: A 3-shot group is useless for any
predictability; statistically it has a 25% (or 75% error) equating the circular error probable (CEP),
statistically it will always suffer from various metric elements (e.g. SD) deviating 60-70% up (worse)
or down (better) within the parameters of a full 30-shot data set. Hunting rifles that start off with a
larger average (¾ MOA), a 3-shot group may typically be 0,5-1,5 MOA. The deviation for a 5-shot
group will be 40-50%, for a 10-shot group 30-40%, for a 20-shot group 20-25%, for a 30-shot group
15-20%, and, for reference purposes, for a 50-shot group 10% in relation to the full shot data set
average. Therefor statistical model: 30-round data set for precision rifles – and 20-round data sets
for hunting rifles for minimum loss/miss risk.
