SubverseIM is an experimental, fully encrypted, peer-to-peer instant messaging application designed for Android mobile devices. No accounts, sign-ins, or passwords required; all of your communications on the Subverse network are fully anonymous and mutually authenticated. Furthermore, SubverseIM is free and open-source software (FOSS), meaning anyone can compile the app and server code from scratch, for free, forever.

The app works by using the BitTorrent DHT network to find IP addresses of peers that are interested in talking to each other. Importantly, your IP is made difficult to associate with your public-key identity, as users receive multiple addresses of associated peers each time they make a request to the DHT with your ID.

SubverseIM is a work-in-progress, with many mission-critical features coming soon, such as voice and video calling via SIP. Additionally, SubverseIM is designed from the ground up with the SIP standard in mind, meaning that the app can become cross-compatible with other SIP and VoIP services, such as Skype, in the future.
