São Luís, Maranhão state capital, founded on September 8, 1612. It is located in the homonymous island (Upaon-açu, the former name given by the Indians Tupinambás translated as "Big Island"), in the South Atlantic, between bays of St. Mark and St. Joseph of Ribamar.
It is the main city in the metropolitan region Greater São Luís. The only Brazilian city founded by the French, and is one of three Brazilian capitals located on islands (the others are Florianópolis and Victoria).
His story - In town location inhabited native of a Tupinambá village until the arrival of the French in 1612, coming from the French cities of Cancale and Saint-Mailo led by Daniel de La Touche, Lord of La Ravardière, who built a fort and named it São Luís, in homage to Louis IX patron of France, and the French King Louis XIII of the time.
