A competition of clear historical medieval mold, which usually takes place twice a year: July 2nd in honor of the Madonna of Provenzano, and August 16, one in honor of Our Lady of the Assumption. The uniqueness and spectacle make this event the most important historical event in Italy. The Palio is ongoing continuously for more than 100 years, so we can not speak of a historical re-enactment, but a real festival, felt as never before by the participants and the public that follows. The protagonists of the Palio, the 17 city districts: Caterpillar, Eagle, Owl, Snail, Dragon, Giraffe, Porcupine, Leocorno, Lupa, Goose, the Wave, Pantera, Selva, Tortoise Tower and Valdimontone; Each year, however, are only the 10 districts that can participate in the race: the 7 districts excluding the previous year and 3 randomly selected. The trophy of the Palio di Siena, which is awarded to the winning is called drappellone or "rag" and consists of a painting on silk and has the dimensions of an elongated rectangle. The program contains the archive with the victories of all the lands from 1644 to today. Remember that the district won the Palio of Siena July 2, 1986?
