Rakin (calculation app for children) is a specially developed learning app for children of preschool and primary school age (www.rakin.acdemy). It supports children in acquiring basic mathematical skills in a playful and digital way. The aim of the app is to convey the joy of learning mathematics and to make it easier to get started with learning at school.

The app is based on a scientifically based development model of mathematical skills (Fritz, Ehlert & Leutner, 2018). This model describes how children from the age of three develop mathematical skills in six successive levels. Studies show that each level must be completed systematically in order to build up a secure basic knowledge. For the age range of three to six years, the first three levels are particularly relevant and the structure of Rakin is based on them.

The Rakin computing app is divided into three worlds that build on one another, each of which represents a level:

- Level 1: The children get to know the number word series confidently, understand the meaning of individual numbers and can count and count quantities.
- Level 2: Children recognize relationships between numbers and develop an internal image of a number line on which the numbers are ordered.
- Level 3: Children understand numbers as sets of individual elements and learn to break numbers down into subsets.

For systematic support, a checklist with specific competencies for each level was developed (Karahisarlioglu & Fritz, 2024). This served as the basis for the design of the app to ensure that all relevant mathematical concepts are covered in the games and promoted in a playful way.

On this basis, Rakin is suitable for both the targeted support of low-performing children by building sustainable basic skills and for the further support of higher-performing children. The app can be used flexibly in daycare centers, primary schools and in the home environment and enables individual adaptation to the children's different learning requirements.

In order to promote the learning process as appealingly and effectively as possible, Rakin includes a variety of varied games that are organized in three thematically designed worlds - each tailored to one of the three levels described. Each game specifically promotes a specific mathematical skill and offers children clear, read-aloud instructions as well as short demonstration videos to ensure better understanding. While working on the tasks, the children are continuously accompanied by a moderator who provides motivating feedback and guides them step by step through the content.

Through this careful combination of didactic standards and playful design, Rakin succeeds in sustainably supporting mathematical learning. Rakin combines scientifically based content with child-friendly, playful learning. Thanks to its clear structure, targeted skills development and motivating implementation, the app offers an ideal basis for supporting children individually and sustainably strengthening their enjoyment of mathematics.
