Called gothic rock, gothic rock goth rock or the set of musical rhythms have in common a taste for the sinister. In that respect we can say that there is a broad and concrete conception of the term. In a broad sense, it encompasses a gothic rock musical current that evolved from post-punk and glam rock of the late 1970s later through the deathrock music and dark wave. In a strict sense, gothic rock refers only to those closest to the rock sounds, falling outside the definition electronic and industrial music.

The gothic rock was born as a branch of British post-punk of the late 70s and most of the first Gothic bands like Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Cure were labeled within these two streams. The gothic rock was developed as such in the early 80s with the opening of the club Batcave and the beginning of the Gothic subculture. In the middle of this decade, Gothic bands like Sisters of Mercy (influenced by the music of Iggy Pop), The Mission and Fields of the Nephilim were reaching the charts in the UK, while pioneering groups as Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Cure they renewed and expanded their sound, achieving international success in the late 1980s.
