******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY ********************

A symphony is s a comprehensive musical composition in Western classical music, usually scored for a concert band or orchestra. A symphony often contains β€œat least one movement or episode composed according to the sonata principle”. Many symphonies are β€œtonal works in four movements with the first in sonata form”, which is often characterized by music theorists as the structure of a "classical" symphony, though various symphonies by the recognized classical masters of the form, Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart do not comply with this model.

In the 17th century and for the majority of the Baroque period, the terms sinfonia and symphony were used for a variety of different compositions, including instrumental pieces used in sonatas, concertos, and operas β€”usually part of a greater work. During the 18th century, the "Italian" style of symphony became a staple three-movement form comprised of a fast movement, a slow movement, and another fast movement. With the advent of recognized professional orchestras, the symphony assumed a more pronounced section in concert life in the 19th century (between approximately 1790 and 1820).

At the start of the 20th century, Gustav Mahler created long and large-scale symphonies. His Eighth Symphony, for instance, was composed in 1906 and is nicknamed the "Symphony of a Thousand" because of the gargantuan forces necessary to perform it. The 20th century also saw an increased diversification in the content and style of works that composers described symphonies.
