Ranchera music (or canción ranchera which is Spanish for "folk music"), is a music genre of Mexico’s traditional music which was initially sung by only one guitar-playing performer. It traces its origin the Mexican Revolution years back in the early part of the 20th century. It eventually became lumped together with the Mariachi groups in Jalisco. Traditional Rancheras express themes like patriotism, love or nature. Ranchera rhythms reflect the tempo of the polka, the waltz, and the bolero.

Typical instruments used include strings, guitars, trumpets, and accordions – it all depend on the kind of ensemble being used. Ranchera music, as well as many traditional Mexican music styles, is famous for the “grito Mexicano”, a form of yell that is performed by the audience or musicians themselves during musical interludes within a song.
