Prepare for the Aromatherapy Certification Exam with the power of scent. "Kaorist" is an original practice question app created based on the scope and publicly available information of the Level 1 and Level 2 Aromatherapy Certification Exams, organized by the AEAJ (Japan Aromatherapy Environment Association). Instead of simply reprinting past questions or official textbooks, it offers 700 practice questions, realistic mock exams for each level, and "Today's Review" questions that appear periodically to support self-study and help you pass the exam.
■ For those who:
・Are self-studying and taking the Aromatherapy Certification Exam for the first time
・Are unsure whether to take Level 2 or Level 1 (can be switched within the app)
・Want to systematically learn everything from the effects of essential oils to the law and history
・Want to check if they can reach the passing line (80% correct answers) in a mock exam in the actual exam format
■ Contents (700 questions in total, covering 10 fields)
Includes 700 questions in total across 10 fields: "Characteristics of Scents," "Basics of Aromatherapy," "Basic Knowledge of Essential Oils," "Safety of Aromatherapy," "Practical Aromatherapy," "Mechanism," "Beauty & Healthcare," "History of Aromatherapy," "Aromatherapy and Law," and "Essential Oil Profiles." The four fields of Mechanism, Beauty & Healthcare, History, and Law are only covered in Level 1. Each question includes an explanation and source, along with memorization tips. The "Elimination Support" feature allows you to cross out unsure options with a double line, enabling practice in a way that closely resembles the actual exam.
■ Switching Between Level 2 and Level 1 Modes
You can switch between "Level 2 Mode" and "Level 1 Mode" at any time from the home screen. In Level 2 Mode, the content is narrowed down to only the Level 2 scope (356 questions), and the list of subjects, the structure of the mock exam, and the target of the essential oil encyclopedia automatically switch to the selected level.
■ Practice Exams in Actual Exam Mode for Each Level (Pass/Fail Judgment Based on 80% Correct Answer Rate)
The app features a mock exam mode that uses the same structure and time as the actual exam: 55 questions for Level 2 and 70 questions for Level 1. Since the internet exam requires an 80% or higher correct answer rate to pass, the mock exam is judged based on that standard, and you can also check the correct answer rate for each subject (there are no minimum passing scores for individual subjects). The answers are hidden until scoring, and even if you close the app midway, you can resume while retaining the question order, answers, and remaining time. It also supports practice by printing out answer sheets in mark sheet format and solving problems on paper. The "fragrance test," which involves smelling actual scents, was discontinued from the 52nd exam (May 2025), and this app has been updated to reflect that change.
■ Skill Assessment Test (Free, 30 questions)
Check your current skill level by subject area, and the results will be used to suggest areas to focus on in the "Pass Roadmap."
■ "Today's Review" and Weakness Prioritization Based on the Forgetting Curve
Record the correctness of questions you've already answered, and re-present them in "Today's Review" when you're starting to forget. You can repeat questions based on your purpose, such as "Weakness Prioritization," "Frequently Appearing ★ Question Master," and "Trick Question Countermeasures," and review your progress with a progress graph, learning calendar, and achievement badges. Incorrectly answered questions can be compiled and printed in the "Error Notebook" with notes.
■ Essential Oil Encyclopedia (30 types in total)
Includes profiles of 11 essential oils for Level 2 and 19 additional essential oils for Level 1. This guide covers everything from scientific names, family names, extraction parts, extraction methods, fragrance characteristics, expected uses, history, trivia, compatible fragrances, and usage precautions.
■ Practice with the same format as the actual exam
In addition to "choose the correct answer," it includes 96 questions in the "choose the incorrect answer" format, as well as 45 reverse lookup questions where you identify essential oil names based on fragrance, family name, and extraction method. An 80% correct answer rate is required to pass; for Level 2, you can only afford to miss 11 out of 55 questions, and for Level 1, only 14 out of 70 questions.
■ Announcements (Exam Schedule, Application, Review)
The home screen displays the next exam date and application period, and notifies you when applications open and close to the deadline. Since the exam is held twice a year, there is approximately a six-month gap between applications. You can set the exam date with a single tap, and it will be reflected in your study plan. Turning on this setting will also send you notifications when it's time for review.
■ Essential Oil Matrix
A dedicated drill that solidifies 30 essential oils with a set of four elements: "scientific name, family name, extraction part, and extraction method." All 120 squares (30 oils x 4 items) are presented, and you can check the squares you've memorized in a list. Both the questions and answers are created from data in an essential oil encyclopedia, ensuring consistency with the encyclopedia (Level 2 mode has 11 oils and 44 squares).
■ Dilution Calculation Trainer
Provides 43 different calculations for "how many drops of essential oil are needed for a 1% concentration in 30mL of carrier oil," using different numerical combinations. The steps of the calculation are also displayed, so you can solve it even if the numbers change during the actual test.
■ Comparative Learning, Flashcards, Glossary, and Number Drills
Includes "Comparative Learning" (13 pairs) comparing similar extraction methods and terms, "Flashcards" (32 cards + 30 essential oils automatically generated from the encyclopedia) in a question-and-answer format, and a "Glossary" (29 words). Includes a "Number Speed Drill" (30 questions) featuring confusing numbers. All questions can be searched across all sections, and in the final stages of preparation, you can use the subject-specific "Last-Minute Summary" for final review.
■ Aromatherapy for Daily Life (Free feature separate from exam preparation)
"Aromatherapy for Daily Life" is a free, fully functional lifestyle content separate from exam preparation. It includes an illustrated guide (101 essential oils and 60 herbs) selectable by mood and scene, and a collection of 51 homemade recipes. Specifying the total volume (mL/g) automatically calculates the amount of ingredients while maintaining a safe dilution ratio. Also includes a "Tool Shop" to find tools and ingredients for recipes, and "Learning from Real-Life Accidents" (4 cases, sources cited), such as accidental ingestion of essential oils and burns due to phototoxicity. It remains free regardless of purchase.
■ Audio-based Learning (TTS)
Question text, answer choices, explanations, and flashcards can be played back as audio. It supports phonetic readings for terms like "pressing" (圧洗) and the kana pronunciation of essential oil scientific names (Latin). Ideal for "learning while doing housework or commuting."
■ Emphasis on Ease of Use
Supports dark mode and adjustable font size. Includes backup/restore of learning data, CSV export, and inter-device synchronization via "password" (encrypted and optional).
■ No Account Registration Required, Offline Use
No registration or login is required. Once opened, you can learn even in areas without network coverage, and there are no advertisements.
■ Free Trial Scope
- First 10 questions in each section

■ What this app cannot do (we'll be honest)
This app is an independent learning support app unrelated to AEAJ and does not provide exam application or official pass/fail results. The mock exam format and scoring are based on the publicly available scope and criteria, but may differ from the actual exam content. Please be sure to check the AEAJ official website's exam guide for final confirmation.
■ About the creator
The creator is a certified Level 1 Aromatherapy Examination pass holder. Based on their own experience of struggling to memorize essential oils and their scientific names, they focused on creating a user-friendly interface between the encyclopedia and questions, providing kana pronunciations of scientific names, and a "learn by comparison" feature that groups confusing items together. This app is one of the original learning app series produced by "App Pharmaceutical." It is a learning material and does not guarantee passing the exam.
Please use Kaorist for your studies if you are aiming to pass the Aromatherapy Examination, Aroma Examination, AEAJ, essential oils, aroma qualifications, question sets, Q&A, mock exams, or self-study.
