Miller Analogies practice tests app contain lots of analogies to help you prepare for the MAT. As a reasonably priced test administered in 60 minutes, the MAT represents an excellent option for candidates applying to any of the hundreds of graduate programs that accept MAT scores for admission.

What is the MAT test?

The Miller Analogies Test (MAT) is a standardized test used primarily for graduate school admissions in the USA, and also accepted as a proxy for IQ by various reputable High IQ societies including American Mensa, Triple Nine Society and Prometheus Society.

What is the average score on the mat?

The median score is 400, with a standard deviation of 25 points. These scores, based on a normal curve, are known as "scaled" scores. Because of their grounding in this model, scaled MAT scores of 500-600 are extremely rare, as they would be more than four standard deviations above the norm of 400.

Background on the MAT

The MAT is a high-level mental ability test requiring the solution of problems stated as analogies.

Performance on the MAT is designed to reflect candidates’ analytical thinking, an ability that is critical for success in both graduate school and professional life.

Through analogies with content from various academic subjects, MAT scores help graduate schools identify candidates whose knowledge and abilities go beyond mere memorizing and repeating information.

The analytical skills measured by the MAT are key to success in graduate school and are highly valued by graduate programs.

For more than 50 years, the MAT has proven to be a reliable and valid test for assessing candidates for graduate school.

Predictive validity studies conducted by Pearson and by independent researchers have shown positive correlations between MAT scores and subsequent success in graduate programs.

How much does it cost to take the mat?

The MAT costs $85 as of July 1, 2015 (online registration adds a $3 convenience fee) payable when making the appointment. Use a credit card to pay via telephone. Checks, money orders, cash or credit cards are accepted if making the appointment in person. No refunds will be given.
