The Leitner system serves as a tool to improve the long-term memory retention of new vocabulary. The basic idea is to review flashcards at increasing intervals. Specifically, there exist 8 Leitner boxes labeled from 0 to 7. Each new card is put into box 0 initially. The goal is to move this card into box 7, which implies that the words on the card have been stored successfully in the long-term memory. If a card is remembered correctly in a test, it is moved to the next box. However, if the answer is incorrect, the card will start over again from box 0. That means for memorizing a card, it must be reviewed correctly 7 times in a row. The boxes correspond to increasing intervals: cards in box are reviewed after days. Suppose a card is currently in box 5, it is guessed correctly and then put into box 6. In that case it will be tested again after 6 days.
The only minor difference between the Leitner system and this app is that cards in box 7 will be tested again after increasing intervals (14 days, 21 days, 28 days...) which is originally not intended.
This app implements the Leitner system digitally, meaning no flashcards need to be printed out, whatsoever. Everything is handled within the app.
In general, it provides the following features:
- import existing .ldf files (will be converted into a format that the app can deal with)
- create new vocabulary lists
- all flashcards are either grouped by category or Leitner box to help one focus on specific weaknesses/topics
- add new cards to existing vocabulary lists
- edit existing flashcards
- test your current knowledge using 3 different modes (recall backside of a card if frontside is shown, vice versa, and a mixture of the two previous modes)
- provide statistical feedback about your test performance
- vocabulary lists are stored in .xml format
- needs no internet connection
Since the Leitner system requires a high level of self-discipline (one's knowledge should be tested daily), it is particularly suitable for motivated learners.
