In the midst of the Great Depression in 1938, an unemployed architect named Alfred Mosher New York Butts he decided to create a board game. Alfred Mosher Butts discovered that there are three types of games, such as motion games, number games, and word games. Move games are checker and chess games and Bingo numbers are Sudoku and word games like anagrams and crosswords. Butts concentrated in this category that involves both skill and chance. Later the game was renamed the Criss-Cross.1

The game is between 2, 3 or 4 players (generally 2 is played) on a 15x15 board boxes, in which each player places his chips. Each player receives a specific number of chips (or letters) randomly drawn. The letters are numbered with its own value, obtained for each word formed a score that depends both on the value of the letters used as the position of those points within the board.

In total there are 100 chips, 98 marked with letters and two blanks (no points are wild being used to replace letters). According to their frequency of occurrence, the letters are more or less points, always the most often worth less. The board also has boxes award, which multiply the number of points awarded: dark red boxes are "triple word" roses "double word" dark blue "triple letter" and blue "double letter".
