Kites, kites, or wau (in some parts of the Malay Peninsula) are thinly framed pieces of material that are flown into the air and connected by ropes or threads to land or controllers. Kites utilize the power of the wind as a means of lifting it. Widely known throughout the world as a game tool. Kites are also known to have ritual functions, fishing aids or traps, as scientific research aids, as well as alternative energy media.

The first note that mentions the kite game is a document from China about 2500 BC. [1] The discovery of a cave painting on Muna Island, Southeast Sulawesi, at the beginning of the 21st century which gives the impression of people playing kites sparked speculation about the traditions that are more than that in the archipelago. Allegedly there is a mutually free development between traditions in China and in the archipelago because in the archipelago found many primitive forms of kites made from leaves. In the archipelago itself the first record of the kite is from Malay History (Sulalatus Salatin) (17th century) which tells of a kite festival followed by a royal authority.

From China, the kite game spread to the West until then popular in Europe.

The kite was famous when used by Benjamin Franklin when he was studying lightning.
