Style bonsai originated in China and belongs to the era of the Tang dynasty. Among the wall paintings found image of a pen tzay -a plant taken from nature and transplanted into a pot.

The word bonsai comes from the Chinese word penzai and means grown in a tray. One of the legends says that a certain emperor ordered to create a miniature empire with all the trees cities rivers and mountains. For this purpose miniature trees were created.

It is believed that art was brought to Japan in the 6th century by Buddhist monks. Cultivated plants were used to decorate a niche at home the maximum height of the trees was therefore about half a meter. After some time in connection with the development of the technique of admiring the bonsai it is being used for the tea ceremony. At this time, art is called hati no ki "a tree in a pot". Since the Japanese finally turn this technique into an art there are many styles. In the Tokugawa era park design received a new impetus: the cultivation of azaleas and maples became a pastime of rich people.
