CADE (Communications and Distance Education) Mobile OnDemand is designed to deliver downloaded interactive video-based training programs and tutorials to employees of Learn.net customers. Once downloaded, employees can watch the program at their leisure and respond to a variety of different question types.
Employees typically use corporate mobile devices for training; therefore, the app supports multiple users on a single device as it can be shared between employees. Most devices will use WiFi to connect to the Learning Management Web (LMW), Learn.net’s main application, and usually don’t have 3/4G connectivity. The mobile app is designed to allow training programs to be taken when there is no access to the Internet: on station in quiet times, in parked vehicles waiting for the next assignment, on the road in trains, buses, airplanes and hotels, or any other location where a connection to the LMW is unavailable.
When in range of the network, employees log on to the app with the same logon and password used with the LMW. This identifies the user to the app and keeps their information separate from other users. These credentials also control the language that the app uses in the user interface. Typically, the user credentials are imported from the corporate HR, payroll, or Active Directory systems and are usually the same credentials used to log on and access corporate information systems.
Selected training programs may be assigned to an employee; alternatively, they may search for courses uniquely available to them since the app knows who they are based on the logon authentication. Programs can be downloaded to the device or taken on-line depending on the specific situation at the time.
Interactive questions may be asked before, during, or after the videos. Question types include: true/false, yes/no, multiple choice, multiple selection, numeric with +- range, fill-in-the-blank, long answer, audio question, and audio response. The app utilizes the device’s microphone and speakers for audio playback and response. After each question, feedback may be given telling the employee why their response was wrong or right. The feedback may include hyperlinks to additional information on the specific question; when tapped, the URL will automatically open Safari to display this information.
Questions are time stamped, graded, and the results are stored on the device until the employee once again has WiFi access, where the results will be uploaded to the LMW and made part of the employee’s permanent training history. The results are stored in the CADE database in a common format regardless whether the course was delivered via the mobile app, interactive satellite (Virtual Classroom), interactive web (eTutor), web-based course, or in a classroom setting. Administrators with the appropriate credentials have additional capabilities and the ability to check the status of employees, videos, and storage on the device through the app.
While the employee results are removed from the device once they are received by the LMW, the employee information and optionally the training programs themselves remain in local storage. Based on customer preferences, training programs may remain on the device after an employee has taken a course to minimize download requirements and time for other learners. In such cases, only the next employee’s information and other course details are downloaded and the program gets played from a video library on the device.
The theme created by each corporate customer in the LMW provides the colors and graphics used by the app to match the corporation’s “look”. This information is downloaded as part of the one-time identification process when the app is used for the very first time. The process stores the address of the LMW for a specific corporation and determines all preferences to be used in the app.
