This language is not a normal language, it has evolved from several languages, (Meaning of Urdu is lashkar/Army which also depicts the same) Urdu has adopted most of its words from several languages mainly Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, Turkish..etc. as a result, there won’t be more than around thousand core Urdu words in the Urdu Language.

If you have just developed your interest in shayari and you are not Urdu speaker or don’t have a decent vocabulary of Urdu I would recommend you to first read shayari in the language you are more comfortable be it Bengali/******i/Hindi or any other language, you will always find many good poets in all popular language. Once you started understanding shayari in that language you may start reading it in Hindi, Hindustani and then finally Urdu is a platform where you will find an ocean of what you might be looking for.

Sometimes people have a creative edge but they cannot write good Urdu poetry. They must keep in mind that having a good diction in the Urdu poetry is very necessary. So the people who have a lot of ideas but bad language, vocabulary or grammar are bound to suffer. People need to have an extremely good command on the language o write Urdu poetry.

There are elaborate rules for doing so which are beyond the scope of this article. For now, all I can suggest is to look at the shaayari by the ustaads and see how they have used a particular word in a particular situation.. You may notice that certain words have been placed against a relatively small portion (or syllable) of a rukn. These are the words whose pronunciation is altered to fit the bah'r.

You may need to take the time to research what you want to write weather it would be Urdu poetry or American based poetry. If you are multicultural then you will be able to understand the Urdu poetry better then if you are just reading American based poetry. Urdu poetry is a great place for a person that is going to start writing poetry to start because it will help you to respect what others before you have written as well as what other cultures may say.

It is the national language of Pakistan and is closely related to and mutually intelligible with Hindi, though a lot of Urdu vocabulary comes from Persian and Arabic, while Hindi contains more vocabulary from Sanskrit. Linguists consider Standard Urdu and Standard Hindi to be different formal registers both derived from the Khari Boli dialect, which is also known as Hindustani.
