The author of "The Art of War" was Sun Zi and Sun Wu, its official name. Traditional stories claimed that his descendant, Sun Bin (孙 膑 / Sun Bin) also wrote a treatise on military tactics, titled Sun Bin's Art of War (孙 膑 兵法 / Sūn bīngfǎ bin). Both Sun Zi and Sun Bin are referred to as Sun Zi in classical Chinese writings, and some historians believed that both were the same person, however, thanks to the discovery of several rolls of bamboo unearthed in 1972 in the Mountain Sparrow Silver ( Yinqueshan), in the city of Linyin, Shandong, he confirmed that Sun Bin wrote his own art of war.

His first appearance was in the French language, published in Paris, 1772, edition of the Jesuit Jean Joseph Marie Amiot-with the title of Art Militaire des Chinois.
