Welcome to the TU Delft 72nd Holiday Course, the New Year's congress of the water sector!

On January 10, 2020, the theme of the Holiday Course is "Smart dealing with volatility"

It was a year with a fairly normal rainfall pattern and the groundwater levels seem to be recovering. However, the 2018 drought did wake us up. We will have to speed up adaptive measures to cope with longer periods of drought and heavy tropical showers. In addition to adaptations to the infrastructure, the policy framework will also have to become "climate proof". In the year 2020, big data and self-learning algorithms will play an increasing role, also within the water sector. To what extent do we already use it and where are the possibilities? Will it take our work off your hands or will we encounter ethical dilemmas? The further interweaving of the water sector with the digital world may also offer opportunities to respond better to climate change. On the other hand, this can lead to greater vulnerability, which will increase the need for cyber security. During the 72nd holiday course we discuss the possible impact of climatic changes and how far-reaching digitization can help us with this. Various speakers paint a picture of the Netherlands in a changing climate, after which we will finish the day "surfing plastic soup". We hope to see you again!
