Vzdolž slovenske obale je le malo mokrišč ob ustjih kratkih, istrskih vodotokov. Včasih je bilo le-teh več, spremenjeni so bili v soline, ki so se nahajale na obrobju obalnih mest (Koprske soline, Izolske soline, Strunjanske soline, Lucijske soline in Sečoveljske soline).

Danes so soline ohranjene le v Strunjanu in Sečovljah. Poleg teh pa so v obalnem pasu še nekatera druga mokrišča, kot so Strunjanska laguna, jezeri v Fiesi, Škocjanski zatok in ustje reke Rižane. Vsa ta območja so umetna, nastala so kot posledica delovanja človeka, vendar v skladu z naravo.

Sečoveljske soline so največje slovensko mokrišče, ki se razteza na približno 650 ha površine, ob ustju reke Dragonje. So tudi najpomembnejše področje v Sloveniji z ornitološkega vidika, saj je vrstna pestrost ptic, ki tu gnezdijo in prezimujejo, večja od ostalih predelov Slovenije. Zabeležili so kar 288 vrst ptičev, od tega jih 90 gnezdi v solinah in njihovi okolici.

Leta 2001 so bile Sečoveljske soline razglašene za krajinski park nacionalne vrednosti. Sečoveljske soline so tudi mednarodno pomembno mokrišče in kot take so bile leta 1993 uvrščene na seznam Ramsarskih lokalitet zaradi izjemnih krajinskih in ekoloških vrednosti. Pomembne so tudi zaradi prepletanja različnih ekosistemov: morskega, sladkovodnega in kopenskega.

Ta interaktivni ključ vključuje najpogostejše slanoljubne rastline Sečoveljskih solin in nekatere neslanoljubne vrste, ki so v solinah pogoste. Uporabljal se bo pri obisku parka v izobraževane namene za šolarje in ostale obiskovalce.

Ključ je bil izdelan v sodelovanju Univerze na Primorskem (Pedagoška fakulteta) in Univerze v Trstu v okviru projekta SiiT (Interaktivna orodja za spoznavanje biotske pestrosti: izobraževalni čezmejni projekt), financiran v sklopu Programa čezmejnega sodelovanja Slovenija-Italija 2007-2013 iz sredstev Evropskega sklada za regionalni razvoj in nacionalnih sredstev.
