Guide halophytes of Saline Sicciole (Piran, Slovenia)

Along the short Slovenian coast there are very few wetlands and marshes near the mouths of the short watercourses of Istria. At one time existed in greater numbers, as the foci were processed into salt pans, which were located on the edge of the cities' coastal (salt marshes of Koper, Izola, Strunjan, Lucia and saltpans).

Today the salt marshes have been preserved only in Strugnano and saltpans, and in addition to these which may include wet lagoons Strugnano, both lakes Fiesso, the lagoon of San Canziano at Koper and the mouth of Risanp. All of these environments are therefore the result of the work of man, but in keeping with the nature.

The salt marshes of Sicciole (in Slovenian Sečoveljske soline) are today the moist environment of greater extension of Slovenia (650 ha) and at the same time the Slovenian town more 'important from the ornithological point of view. The diversity of bird species nesting and wintering in this environment and 'much greater than in other areas. Have been highlighted to date 288 species, of which the district will nest 90.

In 2001 the Government of the Republic of Slovenia has created the Parco delle Saline, proclaimed a cultural monument of national importance. In 1993 Secovlje Salina, as the first wetland in Slovenia, have been included in the list of locations protected by the Ramsar Convention. At the same time the salt marshes are important as an extraordinary assortment of ecosystems, combined forms of transition between marine ecosystems, freshwater ones and those of the mainland.

This interactive guide includes the most common halophytes Sečovlje Salina, plus some species but not strictly halophilic widespread. It will be used by the operators of the Parco delle Saline for educational experiences with schools and visitors.

The guide has been prepared in collaboration between the 'University of Primorska in Koper and the Department of Life Sciences, University of Trieste within the Project SiiT (Interactive tools for the identification of biodiversity: an educational project in an area cross-border), funded under the Cooperation Programme Italy-Slovenia 2007-2013, by the European Regional Development Fund and national funds.
