The genus is named after Louis Antoine de Bougainville the French traveler the leader of the first French round-the-world expedition a member of the Paris Academy of Sciences.

Representatives of the genus evergreen twisted bushes sometimes low trees. Plants in nature reach a height of 5 m. Leaves are alternate with integral edges.
