La Vela Puerca se formó en diciembre de 1995 y es una de las bandas uruguayas de mayor relevancia de los últimos tiempos. Liderada por Sebastián Teysera, "el Enano", fusiona el rock, el reggae y el ska, y se destaca por la fuerte presencia de las trompetas y trombones.
"Deskarado", el primer disco, pudo ser realizado gracias al concurso Generación '96, al cual se habían anotado en secreto. El sello independiente Obligado Records se interesó en el material y aportó más horas de estudio y el trabajo de Claudio Taddei, reconocido músico uruguayo, como productor artístico.
El verano del '98 los encontró girando por la costa uruguaya y llegaron a tocar en el Teatro de Verano, principal escenario montevideano. Telonearon a Los Piojos y alcanzaron el disco de oro, y un año después, el platino.
Este trabajo llegó a manos del productor Gustavo Santaolalla, quien produjo la remezcla del disco y lo relanzó a fines del '99 a través del sello Surco/Universal, con el nombre de "La Vela Puerca".
El desembarco en Argentina se produjo durante la "Girafónica", del verano del 2000, bautizada de esa forma por la afonía de los cantantes durante toda la gira.
"De bichos y flores" lo tuvo a Santaolalla como productor artístico desde el primer día. Comenzaron a grabarlo en Buenos Aires y lo terminaron en Los Angeles, para editarlo en Montevideo en octubre de 2001.
Luego de otro verano a puro show en las costas del Río de la Plata, La Vela Puerca encaró entre marzo y abril del 2004 la grabación del tercer álbum, "A contraluz", también producido por Santaolalla, que terminó de consolidarlos en el mercado argentino con el videoclip "De atar". La presentación del material los llevó a concretar cuatro shows en Obras, un recital en el Velódromo de Montevideo y una gira por Europa y México.
"1995-2009 Normalmente anormal" se llamó el primer DVD de la banda. Editado en diciembre de 2009, incluyó un documental con la historia del grupo, entrevistas y shows. Además, la edición fue acompañada por dos discos con 16 temas en vivo (grabados en Ferro en 2007 y en Montevideo en 2008) y 5 tracks inéditos, canciones que nuevas y otras que quedaron afuera de discos anteriores.
El 2010 fue dedicado a llevar su música por varios lugares de Sudamérica. La gira por Argentina duró desde principios de agosto hasta el mes de septiembre, cuando tuvieron que agregar dos fechas más, los días 3 y 4 en el Estadio Cubierto Malvinas Argentinas.
En 2011, La Vela Puerca edita "Piel y hueso". El quinto álbum de estudio; es doble y contiene 18 canciones en total. Posee una primera parte rockera y un segundo disco acústico.
El 7 de junio de 2013 estrenan "Los reyes de los buzones", el primero de 3 temas que publican en su web oficial, como adelanto de un nuevo disco, agrupados en el EP "Pasaje salvo". Una semana después publican "La hiedra", segunda entrega; por último, el viernes 21 cuelgan "De amar". En noviembre estrenan el video de "Sólo un paredón", corte del disco "Piel y hueso", que sale a la venta durante el mismo mes en formato vinilo.
En julio '14 presentan "Uno para todos", el nuevo DVD de la banda, grabado en vivo los días 22, 23 y 24 de agosto del año anterior en el estadio Luna Park de Buenos Aires, bajo la dirección de Agustín Ferrando Trenchi. También se editó en un doble CD, con las 25 canciones elegidas
