1. Understanding I'tikaf


 I'tikaf by language means silence and settling into something. Medium understanding i'tikaf according to the terms there are differences among the scholars. Al-Hanafiyah (Hanafi scholars) argues i'tikaf is silent in the mosque that was used to perform prayers in congregation, and according to ash-Syafi'iyyah (Shafi'i scholars) i'tikaf means silent in the mosque to carry out deeds -amalan particular with the intention for God. The Legal Affairs Committee and Tajdid in Ramadan guidance book describes I'tikaf is silent in the mosque activity in a certain tempo by doing deeds (acts of worship) certain to expect the pleasure of Allah.
 I'tikaf prescribed by al-Quran and al-Hadith.
Quran surat al-Baqarah (2): 187.
 ; فالآن باشروهن وابتغوا ما كتب الله لكم وكلوا واشربوا حتى يتبين لكم الخيط الأبيض من الخيط الأسود من الفجر ثم أتموا الصيام إلى الليل ولا تباشروهن وأنتم عاكفون في المساجد تلك حدود الله فلا تقربوها كذلك يبين الله آياته للناس لعلهم يتقون. [البقرة (2): 187]
It means: ... then now campurilah them and seek what God has ordained for you, and eat and drink hinggga the white thread from a black thread of the dawn. Then complete the fast until (come) night, (but) they do not interfere in it, are you beri'tikaf in the mosque. That prohibition Allah, then do not you approach. Thus Allah makes His Signs to men, that they may fear Him. "[QS. al-Baqarah (2): 187]
Hadith narrated by Aisyah ra:

أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كان يعتكف العشر الأواخر من رمضان حتى توفاه الله ثم اعتكف أزواجه من بعده. [رواه مسلم]

Meaning: "That the Prophet did i'tikaf on the tenth day of the month of Ramadan last, (he did it) since she arrived in Madinah until he died, then his wives did i'tikaf after his death." [HR. Muslim]
