It is an action program Madeira is legal that aims to promote the sustainable use of species of lesser known woods, coming from certified forests and presenting technological characteristics for
different uses, with as good performance as those traditionally marketed, but already
pressed by the scarcity in the forest, which may lead to its unsustainable and illegal logging.
The application seeks to disseminate this knowledge to timber users.
The aim is to reach a wide audience interested not only in the use of a renewable raw, beautiful material, which has different colors, textures, densities and other properties, but also a consumer who knows that the best way to protect forests is the knowledge of their products and their correct application.
The catalog indicates wood species with known volumes available in the market and from sustainable forest operations.
Woods presented here are part of the available inventories of certified companies.
The species selected fulfill, in addition to forest inventory availability condition, other requirements, such as:
- Wide distribution and occurrence in different regions of tropical forests;
- Potential use in various areas and types of construction;
- Potential for substitution of wood traditionally used in the industry;
- Availability of technological information from a trusted source;
- Some level of knowledge in local, regional or national market;
- Exemption of legal barriers to marketing and use.
The application was developed by the Virtual Space, from work done by the Forest Resources Technology Center - CT- -Floresta / IPT at the request of WWF-Brazil.
