Little mustache

The mustache, also known as mustache, grazledon, sparkler or leafhopper (Brazil)
collar-face, or caretinha bigodeiro (Ceará), occurs almost throughout Brazil.
It is locally common in clearings shrubs, crops, barns edges and areas with tall grasses,
especially near the water. Their habitat is open fields, cultivated fields and barns.
Because of the corner, it is appreciated bird and capture for the illegal trade, along with environmental changes,
eventually reduce their numbers in much of the country, especially in the Northeast.

Scientific name

Its scientific name means: the (Greek) sporos = seed; and philos = you like, friend; and (Latin) lineola,
Line = Line short, thin line.

Characteristics

It measured between 10 and 11 centimeters in length and weighs between 7.5 and 12 grams.
It has a rapid and metallic chirp. The male is unmistakable, the white areas on the head,
responsible for common names. The remaining plumage contrast black tops is remarkable.
The bottoms are lightly light gray and, in bright sun, may appear white. characteristic beak,
small and all black. Along with the long tail, slender body and head slightly bulky,
form a gentler silhouette than most other species of the genus.
These characteristics are essential to help female identification,
especially since often blend in other coleiros in flocks of these granivorous birds.
As it is also all brown, a little lighter on the lower parts,
this morphological feature helps to characterize it. Also the relatively small and yellowish beak,
especially at the bottom.

reproduction

Live in scattered pairs during the breeding season. Have 2-4 litters per year,
2 to 3 eggs in each. As in other species of the group, the male marks the territory,
fitting the female reproductive entire task.

Geographic distribution

Present in Brazil, as a resident in the states of Paraná, São Paulo, Mato Grosso,
Goiás, Espírito Santo and Bahia. During the winter in the southern region migrates to the Amazon and the Northeastern states,
mainly in the states of Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará.
In Espírito Santo and Paraná appears in December to nest and disappears in March and April,
beginning to emerge in the east of Maranhão and Piauí from May.
In southern Minas Gerais species appears in November, disappearing in the course of April.
Found in Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia, as a resident,
and the other countries of the Amazon - Guianas, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, as a migrant during the winter.
